Preparing your layout for TrainPlayer

If you would like to operate your own layout, your club's layout, or a favorite track plan from a back issue of a magazine, and are not inclined to figure out TrackLayer to do the job yourself, we will be glad to add track and prepare your plan for TrainPlayer use.  We will do this at no cost if the layout is suitable for posting on the User Track Plans page.

We offer a free copy of TrackLayer in exchange for your layout.  See details.

Requirements

To submit your layout, you will need to supply a diagram of your track plan.  It does not need Kalmbach-level artwork, or any artwork at all, as long as it has a clear diagram of the track.  The diagram can take any of the following forms:

  • Output file from a graphics or CAD program.  We accept most popular graphic formats -- jpg, gif, bmp, png, dxf, pdf, wmf, eps, psd -- and some railroad CAD ones, such as rrc from Abracadata or rts from Atlas.  If you have a different format, write and ask about it.  Graphic files should be high resolution, preferably 300dpi.
  • Output file from a scanned image.  You can scan it yourself or have Kinko's do it.  Preferable output is 300dpi jpg.
  • Sheet(s) of paper, mailed to our address in California (see the Contact page).

In addition to the diagram, we need:

  • the modelling scale (HO, N, etc.)
  • the measurements -- if the diagram does not have a grid or ruler, specify the overall dimensions.
  • the layout name
  • data for the Info box: source, designer, website link, a bit of history or commentary, operating instructions

Send the above by e-mail to info@trainplayer.com, and we'll respond with an estimate of job time and cost.

Your Layout on Our Site

Whether the track was added by us, or by you using TrackLayer, we invite you to post the results on our website for other users to operate and enjoy.

To be suitable, the track diagram needs to be original, or accompanied by written permission to post for public use.  If we prepared the layout, then before it is posted you will be asked to test-drive and check for errors or omissions, and optionally supply trains and rolling stock or indicate station locations.

For more information about preparing and posting your layout, inquire by e-mail.
